WSOP Event #68 $10K NLHE Main Event Day 1B

The final number of entrants into Day 1B wasn’t available this morning, but if the proportion of players is comparable to Day 1A, then it was about 1,800. There were 1,154 players who made it through 1B, including three dozen players from the Northwest. Portland’s George Wolff was among the higher-ranked returnees from 1B, along with stalwarts Harsukpaul Sangha, Esther Taylor-Brady, and Kevin MacPhee. If you were a fan of last year’s Main Event confrontations, you’ll be happy to know Curtis “every poker player’s nightmare” Rystadt is still representing Portland as his hometown. And Carter Gill—still chasing Annie Duke on the Oregon All-Time Money List—is also on to Day 2. Washington’s Dana Buck made it through and one of his tweets got picked up for the WSOP Updates page. Today’s the last entry day for the Main Event!

WSOP Daily Deepstack $235 NLHE 7/4

The number of entries to the 3pm event have been dropping, this one was down to 657. Still, there was more than $25K scheduled for first place, a 100x return on your money if you made it there. Thomas Shannon of BC almost did, taking 3rd. Taylor Hart (OR) got 17th. Frank Coccia (WA) and Portland’s Christopher Miller came in 54th and 55th.

WSOP Daily Deepstack $235 NLHE 7/5

OR’s Thomas Meixner was the top PNW finisher in this one, at 14th of 679 entries. Tam Nguyen (OR) took 50th.

PNW_WSOP_15 Summer Series Report for July 5

WSOP Event #63 $1.5K Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Day 4

With just three-and-a-half big bets (less than a third of his two opponents on Day 4), Dan Idema needed to get some traction to get out of third place. It didn’t happen, however, and Idema lasted all of twenty minutes before he cashed for his fifth time at this year’s series.

WSOP Event #66 $777 NLHE Lucky Sevens Day 3

The Lucky Sevens played down to the unofficial final table of ten on Day 3, but none of the three remaining PNW players made it. Jacqueline (#SummerOfJackie) Burkhart was the first to fall, cashing for a second time in this year’s series. It was Gabriel Sechan’s first WSOP cash. Kevin MacPhee has racked up six this year. Friend of the blog Jeff Dobrin is second in chips in the final ten, keep an eye on the WSOP Live Stream page; video will go live 30 minutes after a player is eliminated to make the official final table.

WSOP Event #67 $10K NLHE Dealers Choice Day 3

Rep Porter of Washington got close to a third WSOP bracelet, but was short-stacked toward the end of the tournament and ground down by eventual champion Quin Do. It was Porter’s seventh cash of the summer and his second final table.

WSOP Event #68 $10K NLHE Main Event Day 1A

There’s possibly some strategy about which of the three entry days you start with in the Main Event. The Sunday Day 1A always has the smallest field, just 741 this year; 771 last year. Days 1B and 1C will have several thousand each, as people who don’t want to wait around a couple days for Day 2 (assuming they get there) show up in town. Day 1A is for the people already in town because they’ve been playing the series, or they just have the wherewithal to spend the extra days. It worked out well for the guy who was the chip leader of Day 1A last year: Martin Jacobson.

470 players made it through Day 1A (63% of entries). The current chip leader has 152K, the median stack is 40K (from a 30K starting stack). This is the first crop of PNW players who are going through to Day 2.

End of the Line

Final Table $20K NLHE

I’d hoped to make it back down to Las Vegas for the end of the WSOP, at least to catch the Media Tournament next Thursday, but I needed a bit of a bump to the bankroll to justify the trip, and the First Friday $20K was the last chance before the Main Even started.

The evening got off to a bad beginning, when I raised [7c 8s] from early position at 25/50, got a bunch of callers, and flopped [4c 5c 6c]. Not quite the nuts, but I continued betting. an inconsequential high card came on the turn—if my straight was still good, it didn’t make any difference, and I still had the straight flush re-draw—then it was [tc] on the river. I bet my flush, but ended up calling a bet from [ac qs] and losing another 1.5K.

Then the next hand (and we’re still in the first level), I get [kc ks] UTG. I bet 400, get several calls, get an all-heart flop, bet half my stack, and call a shove from the same guy I lost to in the previous hand (let’s just call him “The Villain”), thinking he might be just trying to scare me with the flush draw. Nope. he’s already there with [ah qh], and I have to rebuy.

By the break, I’ve chipped up above average, with about 30K after the add-on (with average at 20K). I played [6x 7x] earlier and caught a straight against an incredibly annoying player, one of those guys who just wonder how they get through life at all, much less play poker (though he was still there when our table broke and I was huffing fumes. so draw your own conclusions there).

Playing [6d 4d] after the break, I caught bottom pair on a flop of [ax 4x 7x], then hit the bank with [6x] on the turn. I was in for nearly 7K but had to shut it down with [ax] on the river.

Drifting downward to about 17K through a series of bets and folds, I finally took a stand against a raise to 2K from The Villain on my BB. He’d lost a bunch of ships after a good start and was down to about 12K. I re-raised to 7K with [kh qh] and he shoved [ax tx]. I missed the flop entirely and was left with about 5K before the second break.

I rode through part of an orbit after the 25 chips were chipped up, then was mercifully moved just before the big blind hit me. Blinds and antes had whittled my stack. Weasels ripped my flesh. There was an early position raise to 3.5K, I had [ac kc] and exactly that much left, so I called all-in. I went up against [ah jd] and four diamonds hit the board by the river.

60th of 122 players. Three hours and forty minutes.

WSOP Daily Deepstacks $135 7/2

Ghulam Mirza Mohammed of Kennewick, Washington was runner-up here, and Charles Giamalvo of Tillamook, Oregon placed 11th.

WSOP Daily Deepstacks $185 7/2

Another fairly large Daily Deepstack (see a graph of the prize pools from this summer), with Kevin Guenette of the Big Vancouver (BC) placing in third, the only PNW player to cash.

WSOP Daily Deepstacks $235 7/2

Eric Aasa (ID) was the top PNW finisher in this 1,118-entry event, at 27th. Kerry Moynahan (OR) came in 48th. Other finishers: Joseph Robinson (OR, 82), David Davis (BC, 105), Shea Monson (BC, 116), and Allen Oh (OR, 117) squeaking into the money.

Wynn Summer Classic $600 NLHE $150K Guarantee

There was a minor overlay in this event, and Idaho’s Michael Hahn broke through the overwhelmingly Nevada-infested waters of the Wynn’s tournaments to take third place, for $18.9K. Or maybe they just look Nevada-infested because the result page has places like “Portugal, NV” and  “Dongsum, NV” and “Ottawa, ON, NV”.

PHamous Poker Series Event #56 $400 NLHE $200K Guarantee

The final $200K in one day event had two PNW cashers, Anthony Mar of BC and Ghulam Mirza Muhammad of WA (who appears to have had a good prelude to the weekend since he’s making his second appearance in this daily report).

Upcoming Las Vegas Series Events

PNW_WSOP_15 Summer Series Report for July 2

WSOP Daily Deepstacks $235 7/1

Nobody from the PNW bothered cashing in the smaller games. Cheng Saetern of Seattle saved it up for the $235 and took 3rd place for $16.8K. Douglas Davidson and Pilar Tucker (both WA) almost made the final table, placing 13th and 16th. OR’s Charles Mast took 53rd and Ronald Southwick (also OR) was 55th. WA’s David Yamashita and Robert Lennon rounded out the PNW finishers, at 65th and 69th.

The $235 Daily Deepstack on 6/30 didn’t run because of the Little One for One Drop, and results from the later tournament s that day haven’t shown up yet. There won’t be a $235 today because of the Lucky Sevens event.

WSOP Event #61 $1,111 NLHE Little One for One Drop Day 3

The Little One played down to 14 places on Day 3 but neither of the final two PNW players were still in.

My plan is to continue reports through to the selection of the November Nine, though there’s going to be less and less other news, as just about everything but the Venetian Deepstacks Extravaganza folds tents after the weekend. Thanks to everyone who’s commented, provided info, or given encouragement over the past few weeks. It’s been a lot of fun—and a fair amount of unpaid work—to try to keep up on the news with some venues that have somewhat spotty reporting (It’s the internet age, folks! It’s not that hard to post information!) and dealing with the fact that I can’t even remember some of the names I typed into reports yesterday.

WSOP Daily Deepstacks $135 6/29

The Monday event for the small Deepstack got 162 entries and Andrew Krywaniuk of BC placed 4th.

WSOP Daily Deepstacks $185 6/29

The only PNW finisher in this 270-entry tournament was WA’s Marshall Adams, who made it to 6th place.

WSOP Daily Deepstacks $235 6/29

It was Oregon day at the Deepstacks. Salem pro Tam Nguyen placed 7th in a 1,017-entry field. Portland’s Kao Saechao took 52nd, Chris Hughes and David Zehner were 66th and 74th, and Christopher Martin of Grants Pass rounded out the state’s domination at 97th. British Columbia was represented by David Davis (82nd) and Eric Vallee (106th).

WSOP Event #57 $1K NLHE Day 3

Washington’s Zach Humphrey was near the bottom of the pack going into Day 2 but managed to ladder up a little, placing 14th. Two players are HU for an extra Day 4
